Preparation

To prepare for gynecomastia surgery, you will need to stop drinking alcohol temporarily. If you smoke, you must also stop for several weeks for optimal results. Dr. Bandy also requires that all patients complete lab work 2 weeks before surgery. If you are not feeling well before the procedure, you should notify Dr. Bandy’s office. During your consultation, she will provide specific instructions to help you prepare.

Procedure

Gynecomastia surgery is personalized to address your unique body goals. Dr. Bandy can perform liposuction and/or surgical excision, depending on the condition of your chest and your aesthetic goals. First, you will receive anesthesia, and our team will cleanse your skin. Dr. Bandy can perform different techniques to address the excess breast tissue:

  • Liposuction: Dr. Bandy can remove fatty tissue with gentle suction that preserves the surrounding tissue. She will make an incision along the natural curves of your skin to administer tumescent fluid–a combination of lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline, which causes the fat cells to swell for easy removal. She will insert a cannula to remove the fatty tissue and sculpt the chest for a more masculine-looking appearance.
  • Breast Reduction Surgery: If you have excess glandular tissue, she can excise it with discreet incisions, typically around the areola, to reshape your chest. She can also combine this method with liposuction for optimal results.

Some men also experience changes to the size of the nipple and/or areola, sometimes causing it to appear larger. Dr. Bandy can make modifications to help you achieve natural-looking results.

Recovery

Recovery time varies depending on the amount of breast tissue Dr. Bandy removes and your medical history. You can return home to recover after your monitoring period. You should arrange for a trusted adult to drive you home and assist you during your recovery. If you do not have anyone to care for you at home, our office has a post-operative recovery center where our team can care for you for the first 24 hours. You should wear your compression garment as directed by Dr. Bandy to minimize swelling and help your body heal. She will also cover the treatment area with surgical tapes, which must remain in place for a few weeks.

Dr. Bandy will prescribe pain medications and antibiotics to help alleviate discomfort. If you received general anesthesia, she can prescribe an anti-nausea medication as well. You should avoid strenuous activities such as heavy lifting and intense exercise for several weeks and refrain from lifting more than 5 pounds for approximately one week after surgery. During your follow-up appointment, Dr. Bandy will monitor your progress. If you have any questions, contact our Newport Beach office or call (949) 868-8839!

Results

Gynecomastia Dr. Amy Bandy Newport Beach

Gynecomastia surgery can sculpt the chest for a more masculine-looking appearance and is the most effective way to remove excess breast tissue. Many men find that their self-confidence improves afterward and that they feel comfortable in different types of clothing. If you remain at a stable weight, you can enjoy long-lasting results.

Additional Body Treatments

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is a procedure that removes excess, droopy skin from the midsection for a smoother appearance. Droopy skin is common after weight loss, and it can cause uncomfortable rashes that affect your quality of life. It can also affect the way your clothing fits. During a tummy tuck, Dr. Bandy will make a thin incision along your underwear line to remove the excess tissue and tighten your skin for a more slender figure. If you maintain a stable weight, you can enjoy long-lasting results.

Arm Lift

An arm lift (brachioplasty) is a procedure that removes excess skin from the arms, colloquially known as “bat wings,” that affect your appearance. Droopy skin on the arms can swing uncomfortably and affect the way your clothing fits. With a thin incision along the underside of the arm, Dr. Bandy can tighten the skin. She can also combine the procedure with liposuction to emphasize your muscle definition.

Fat Transfer

A fat transfer removes excess fat from one area of the body and injects it into another area to provide natural-looking volume. If you want to remove excess fat and use it to enhance another area of the body, Dr. Bandy can combine your gynecomastia surgery with liposuction. During a fat transfer procedure, she will perform liposuction and process the removed fat to concentrate viable fat cells for reinjection. She will use a thin needle to administer the fat beneath the skin for natural-looking volume.
