Are You a Candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic or Another Neuromodulator?

Potential candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic have unwanted signs of aging on the face. While this treatment cannot address significant sagging, it can improve the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and certain other features on the face that patients may be dissatisfied with.

How Old Should You Be to Use BOTOX® Cosmetic?

The severity of your wrinkles and lines, not your age, determines the right time to start using BOTOX® Cosmetic. 64 percent of plastic surgeons have reported seeing an increase in these injectable treatments for women and men in their early 30s.

The reduction of collagen, genetic factors, and sun damage all contribute to the aging process, and individuals just age at their own pace.

What Is the Difference Between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Other Neuromodulators?

In addition to BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dr. Bandy offers the following other neuromodulators.

Each of these products is subtly different, and each one treats slightly different concerns.

Jeuveau®

Jeuveau® — commonly referred to as “Newtox” — is a slightly different form of botulinum toxin used to treat fine wrinkles in the forehead. Because the ingredients are the same, but the preparation is different, there may be minor differences in overall effectiveness.

Jeuveau® is specifically designed to target aesthetic concerns. Unlike BOTOX®, which can target medical conditions like migraine, hyperhidrosis, and muscle spasms, Newtox is used only for cosmetic purposes.

XEOMIN®

XEOMIN® is a slightly different neuromodulator without some protein markers found in BOTOX® Cosmetic. This means that XEOMIN® is slightly more concentrated and has a lower risk of developing antibody resistance. While XEOMIN® is as effective as BOTOX® Cosmetic for wrinkle reduction, it may not treat as many areas. For instance, if your primary concern is crow’s feet, BOTOX® Cosmetic should be your go-to, as XEOMIN® is not effective for these types of lines.

Dysport®

Dysport® is another neuromodulator meant to treat moderate to severe frown lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows. It is more specialized than BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Dysport® is ideal for treating moderate to severe glabellar lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows). Because Dysport® has a much more diluted concentration — compared to BOTOX® Cosmetic — it spreads much more quickly and is better suited for larger treatment areas.

How BOTOX® Cosmetic Works

A very thin needle is used to inject small amounts of BOTOX® Cosmetic or other neuromodulators into specific muscles. This process blocks chemical signals from nerves that cause the muscles to contract, which allows the muscles to relax and the wrinkles to smooth out. The amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic and the number of injections needed will depend on the area being treated and the extent of correction required.

You will be advised not to lay down for up to six hours after receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic, as this can lead to the solution spreading to other unintended areas.

What Are Common Misconceptions About Injectable Neuromodulators?

BOTOX® Cosmetic, Jeuveau®, XEOMIN®, and Dysport® can give people a youthful and rejuvenated appearance, yet some common misconceptions prohibit people from seeking these treatments to correct unwanted lines.

Some believe BOTOX® is dangerous, but it is safe when performed by an experienced and certified injector.

Neuromodulators Freeze Your Face:

False

People often associate BOTOX® Cosmetic with making people look emotionless or appear frozen. When injected by a professional, BOTOX® Cosmetic will provide a natural and refreshed appearance.

You Must Already Have Wrinkles to Use BOTOX® Cosmetic:

False

It is beneficial to begin BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments as a preventive measure before wrinkles make their mark. BOTOX® as a pre-emptive method can help train your muscles not to make certain movements, which will, in turn, lessen the amount of fine lines that develop.

BOTOX® Is Only Used for Wrinkles:

False

BOTOX® can be used for various things, such as treating chronic migraines, lifting eyebrows, treating dimpling of the chin, and softening the jawline. This injectable treatment can also be used to soothe muscle spasms.

What Is Recovery Like After a BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment?

A significant benefit of BOTOX® Cosmetic is that it requires minimal to no downtime; you can return to your regular activities immediately after treatment.

You will be instructed not to lay down or touch the injected areas for six hours after treatment. Patients should also avoid vigorous exercise following treatment to minimize potential swelling and bruising.

When Will I See My Results From BOTOX® Cosmetic?

You may notice results within a few days, but it can take up to one week to see the full effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic, Jeuveau®, XEOMIN®, or Dysport® treatments.

The results from a single session typically last three to four months. To maintain these effects, you will need to schedule follow-up appointments.

Do Some Neuromodulators Last Longer Than Others?

All neuromodulators, from BOTOX® Cosmetic to Jeuveau® to Dysport®, last roughly the same amount of time before they require additional injections. This is usually somewhere between three and six months. It is important to understand that every person will respond to these injections differently, and some patients will see their results last longer than others. This simply depends on how their body processes the material.

Some patients experience longer-lasting results after several treatment sessions; however, this is not the case for everyone.

How Much Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

The cost of BOTOX® Cosmetic can vary and depends on the amount of product used, the time the treatment requires, and the experience of the surgeon or injector. BOTOX® Cosmetic (like all injectable treatments) are priced per area. Therefore, the cost of your treatment will vary significantly depending on the size of the treatment area and how much product is necessary to adequately treat that area. Because all neuromodulators have different consistencies and spread to varying degrees in the treatment areas, some patients may need more of a particular neuromodulator than they would another. This will be discussed during your consultation.

In addition, there are slight price differences between neuromodulator products and brands.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the average cost of BOTOX® is roughly $466 per session.

When was BOTOX® Cosmetic approved by the FDA?

The FDA approved BOTOX® for cosmetic uses in 2002. Since then, BOTOX® Cosmetic has helped restore confidence and reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles that develop over time. It is one of the most common non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

BOTOX® is also known to alleviate chronic migraine headaches. The FDA approved BOTOX® to treat chronic migraines in 2010.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic safe?

Some believe BOTOX® Cosmetic is dangerous, but it is safe when performed by an experienced and certified injector. When receiving any cosmetic service, consider seeking treatment from a board-certified plastic surgeon.

There are no permanent effects from a BOTOX® Cosmetic injection. Neuromodulator treatments are temporary and will not contribute to any lasting nerve damage.

How many injections will I receive?

Dr. Bandy will customize your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment to meet your personal goals. A consultation will determine the appropriate treatment and which areas can be treated depending on the amount of frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines you want to treat.

Crow’s feet typically require three injections on each side, while frown lines and forehead lines are generally treated with five injections each.

These amounts may vary if you are using a neuromodulator other than BOTOX® Cosmetic or you are combining products.

Can BOTOX® Cosmetic replace the need for surgical treatments?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is used to reduce the signs of aging, much like common facial plastic surgery procedures like facelift surgery or brow lift surgery. While the goal is the same, the methods and quality of results could not be any more different.

For some patients, BOTOX® Cosmetic can postpone the need for a brow lift (as they both address lines and wrinkles in the forehead and brow area); however, a brow lift will provide much more extensive and much longer-lasting results.

BOTOX® Cosmetic — like all injectable treatments — are commonly used as “touch-up” methods following surgical procedures like facelift surgery, brow lift surgery, or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Can BOTOX® Cosmetic be combined with other treatments?

BOTOX® Cosmetic can be performed as a standalone procedure or in combination with one of the following:
