About Liposuction

Liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery option aimed at body contouring through effective fat removal. It essentially targets specific bulges or accumulations of fat found in various parts of the body, including the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, arms, and neck. Factors such as genetics, aging, and hormonal changes influence how and where our bodies store fat. Traditional methods like dieting and exercising may not be effective for everyone, as some individuals struggle with persistent fatty deposits despite their best efforts. Liposuction offers an avenue for these patients to achieve a slimmer silhouette. Liposuction is often performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. Instead, it is a way to remove unwanted fat from specific areas of the body that do not respond to diet or exercise in individuals who are at or near their ideal body weight.

Benefits

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures around the world because of the numerous benefits the procedure provides. Some of these potential benefits might include:

  • Efficient Fat Removal: Liposuction targets stubborn areas of fat that resist other weight-loss methods.
  • Improved Body Contours: Patients can experience significant enhancements in their body shape and proportions.
  • Boosted Confidence: Many patients report increased self-esteem and satisfaction with their bodies thanks to improvements in body composition.
  • Customizable and Comprehensive Treatment: Liposuction can be tailored to meet individual patient goals, regardless of gender or body type, and is often combined with other cosmetic procedures.
  • Long-lasting Results: Once the fat cells are removed, they do not grow back. Maintaining a stable weight allows for long-lasting effects.
  • Enhanced Motivation: Some individuals experience an increase in motivation to adopt healthy lifestyle practices such as establishing new exercise routines following liposuction.

The physical and mental benefits associated with liposuction have been shown to lead to improvements in overall quality of life for many individuals, (2) which is why we encourage all prospective patients to explore their options with a consultation. Preparation

Before your procedure, it is important to follow specific guidelines to ensure a smooth process. You might be asked to discontinue any blood-thinning medications or supplements as directed, avoid smoking in the weeks leading up to your surgery, and arrange for transportation home. Additionally, plan for ample recovery time away from work and daily commitments.

Dr. Bandy and her staff will walk you through the entire preparation process and will be available to answer any questions you might have. Preparing properly will help contribute to a smooth and successful experience.

Procedure

The details of your liposuction procedure will differ depending on the location and size of the treatment area. The procedure often begins with the administration of general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. Dr. Bandy will then make incisions in inconspicuous areas near the targeted fat deposits. Tumescent fluid helps to swell the fat and prepare it for removal. She will insert a thin tube called a cannula through these incisions to loosen and suction out the fat. The entire procedure generally lasts one to three hours depending on the extent of the treatment.

Recovery

Recovery varies for each individual based on the extent of the procedure. Common experiences include swelling and bruising, which usually subside within a few weeks. Wearing compression garments as instructed helps promote healing. Patients should gradually resume normal activities under the guidance of Dr. Bandy. While many can return to light activities within a few days, full recovery may take several weeks.

Following the healing period, many patients often notice a remarkable transformation in their body contours. The bulk of results often emerge a few months after the procedure when the swelling completely subsides. When the patient continues to practice proper diet and exercise habits, the results from liposuction have the potential to not only be transformative, but also long-lasting.

Cost of Liposuction in Newport Beach

Because liposuction is a highly customizable, comprehensive treatment, the cost of your procedure will vary. The price of your procedure will depend largely on factors such as the extent of your procedure and whether or not additional procedures are performed. Dr. Bandy and her staff will provide a detailed cost estimate to you during your personal consultation as well as answer any questions you might have. Bodies by Bandy also offers financing options to those who qualify.

FAQ

How does Liposuction work?

Liposuction is performed with a patient under general anesthesia. Traditional liposuction is performed by making small incisions that are often less than 1/4 of an inch in length. Your surgeon will then insert a small cannula into the incision. We infuse the targeted area with a tumescent solution, which helps break up fat and makes removal easier. The surgeon must make slow, precise maneuvers as they contour and shape the figure.

Are scars visible after Liposuction?

Whenever possible, we place incisions in discreet and hidden areas. With proper post-surgical care and the passage of time, scars often fade significantly and become even less noticeable.

Is Liposuction safe?

As with any surgical procedure, liposuction carries risks. Our patients’ safety is our number one priority; Dr. Bandy strictly adheres to standards put forth by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Five liters should be the maximum amount of aspirate (fluid, fat, and blood) that is removed during any liposuction procedure. Patients requesting a total volume reduction of greater than 5 liters will need to have a second liposuction procedure to accommodate their requests. Before a procedure, a patient answers a thorough health and family health history questionnaire to determine if they are more at risk for certain post-surgical complications such as blood clotting. Patient blood samples are also sent to pathology for testing to determine if the patient is eligible for a procedure like liposuction. Precautions are taken to ensure that the patient has a pleasant experience and achieves the best results possible.

What areas of the body can be improved with liposuction?

Common areas of liposuction are generally the abdomen, hips, flanks, inner and outer thighs, arms, chin (submental), bra area, and pubic area. For men with excessive breast tissue, liposuction can also be performed to remove unwanted breast tissue that has formed. Other less common areas of liposuction include calves, forearms, and the fatty area directly above the tailbone.

Will the fat grow back with weight gain?

No, fat will not grow back after liposuction. Humans are born with a number of fat cells that do not multiply with growth or aging. Each individual cell can grow bigger or smaller with weight gain or weight loss, but the body cannot grow additional fat cells. It is important to adopt a healthy lifestyle after any liposuction treatment, as weight gain can still impact the appearance of results.

Can Liposuction treat cellulite?

Cellulite is formed by fibrous tissue within the body that is interwoven through tissue and fat. Cellulite appearance can be improved with diet and exercise but can be impacted by puberty, metabolism, diet, exercise, weight loss, weight gain, and fluctuation in skin laxity. There is no proven treatment to correct cellulite. However, there have been several advances in the aesthetic industry and there are options that have been shown to improve the appearance of cellulite. These options may be discussed at the time of a pre-or post-operative consultation with Dr. Bandy and/or her staff, as our office does provide SmartWave therapy to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Why does the pricing for liposuction vary so much?

Liposuction prices vary because the surgery time can vary considerably. This depends on the location of the treated area, the amount of fat being removed, the technique used, and the type of anesthesia administered.
