Blepharoplasty / Eyelid Surgery Dr. Amy Bandy

A blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, is a treatment that repositions and removes excess skin, fat, and tissue from the eyelids to create a more youthful, awake appearance. This procedure can help improve vision by removing any drooping skin that may obstruct vision while reducing bags and puffiness in the under-eye area. Blepharoplasty is the fifth most popular procedure performed in the country and saw an 18.84% increase between pre-pandemic 2019 and 2023, with a 5% increase in procedures performed between the years 2022 and 2023 alone. About Blepharoplasty

A blepharoplasty is a procedure that repositions and removes excess eyelid skin to help create a smoother, refreshed look around the eyes. There are many benefits of receiving a blepharoplasty; many patients choose to receive blepharoplasty procedures to address heavy, drooping eyelids. This treatment can also provide a more awake appearance, as it reduces the appearance of under-eye bags or puffiness caused by bulging fat pockets. After either an upper or lower blepharoplasty–or a combined blepharoplasty procedure–patients can see improved symmetry and smoothness around the treatment site in both upper and lower blepharoplasties. The results are long-lasting and can last anywhere between 5-10 years. (3)

Ideal Candidates

The ideal candidate for blepharoplasty treatment is anyone who is experiencing excess, sagging skin, or bulging fat around the eyelids due to aging. This can lead to obstructed vision or a more aged appearance in patients. All candidates interested in a blepharoplasty procedure should be in good health overall with no underlying medical conditions that may impair the healing process.

Preparation

Before each procedure, Dr. Bandy will provide each patient with a set of preparation instructions to ensure each patient is thoroughly prepared for their appointment. She will set each patient on a vitamin protocol and ask certain patients to stop taking blood-thinning medications and supplements if necessary. Patients should pre-arrange transportation home from our facility; many find it can be helpful to have a trusted friend or family member assist them during their first 24 hours of healing as well. If applicable, please be prepared to quit smoking before their procedure and refrain from tobacco and nicotine until fully healed, or until Dr. Brandy approves.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

A blepharoplasty procedure is often shorter in duration, taking 1-2 hours on average to complete, depending on the level of complexity, the medical history of the patient, and the discussed treatment plan. This procedure can either be performed under local or general anesthesia.

Upper-Eyelid Procedure

Treating the upper eyelid area begins with Dr. Bandy marking the treatment area carefully before creating an incision. This incision is often made along the natural crease of the eyelid to help minimize any visual scarring. From there, excess skin and fat are removed while the remaining eyelid tissues are tightened and repositioned. Once everything is set in place, Dr. Bandy will use suturing techniques to close the incision up and ensure any scarring is discreet and hidden.

Lower-Eyelid Procedure

The incision can either be placed below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid, depending on the patient’s situation and goals. After the incision is made, the fat is removed and repositioned along with any excess skin. The positioning aims to alleviate hollowing in the eyes, as well as puffiness. (4) After the tissues are adjusted, Dr. Bandy will close the incision with sutures or stitches with a focus on minimizing any visible scars.

Recovery

Before their procedure, patients are prescribed an antibiotic and pain medication to help minimize any discomfort experienced during healing. Individuals who have undergone general anesthesia may be prescribed anti-nausea medications. It is recommended to take time away from work and other social commitments during the first few weeks of recovery to focus on resting and healing.

For the first 48 hours following treatment, patients are recommended to use ice on their eyes to help reduce swelling. Bruising and tenderness are common and typically subside within a week, but any discomfort can be mitigated with pain medication. Physical activity and other strenuous tasks should be avoided for 2-3 weeks or until approved by Dr. Bandy.

Patients may be asked to return to our facility for a follow-up appointment so that our team can ensure proper healing after each procedure. Throughout the following months after blepharoplasty treatment, any visible scarring will fade and become barely noticeable. Patients will be able to experience the final results of the procedure reaching their full effect anywhere between 2-3 months after their blepharoplasty treatment.

We do have a post-operative recovery facility that we refer our patients to in Orange County, CA, and Los Angeles, CA. In these situations, they will be picked up by the post-operative care facility from our recovery room and brought to the recovery center where they will rest overnight, and then brought back the next day for their follow-up appointment.
