Dermal Fillers in Newport Beach, Orange County CA

In youth, the skin has a large amount of collagen & hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that is found in all cells and its ability to attract and bind water up to 100x its volume is what provides a youthful appearance to the skin. As we age, and with exposure to the sun and the elements, we begin to lose hyaluronic acid, which then reduces skin structure and volume, resulting in lines and wrinkles and a deflated look.

  • Q: What is Juvederm?
A: Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid used as a dermal filler, meaning that it is used to restore volume to areas of the skin that have lost volume. Volume loss can occur on a dermal level from multiple factors. Some of these include the natural aging process, weight loss, stress and indentations on the skin from scarring. With scarring, Juvederm would be used to plump the tissues where ever the scarring is apparent on the skin. With volume loss from aging, weight loss and stress, the most common area that is treated with Juvederm are the vertical ‘Smile Lines’ (also referred to as the ‘Parentheses Lines’) and the lips. These ‘Smile Lines’ lines that start at the outer aspect of the nostril and proceed down to the corners of the mouth. Also treatable are the ‘Marionette Lines’ which run vertical and start just below the corner of the mouth. For peoples that complain of wrinkles above the lip area, Juvederm is injected to smooth the appearance of these wrinkles.Although Allergan produces different levels of Juvederm, Juvederm XC is by far the most popular used in our practice. Juvederm XC has a local anesthetic mixed within the product and numbs the patient as it is injected. In comparison to other products on the market, Juvederm has a high patient satisfaction rating and patients love that Juvederm XC can last for up to a year while many other products last for only 3-6 months.
  • Q: What is Sculptra?
A: While synthetic dermal fillers are extremely popular as there is an immediate result, there is another alternative that has it’s own advantage. Sculptra is a dermal filler that acts to restore lost collagen over a period of time with several injections placed about a month apart from each other. The benefit to a product like Sculptra is that it encourages your body to produce its own collagen and help replace what was lost which now leave wrinkles or folds. A patient can also see a gradual correction to the area with results lasting up to two years, which is twice the length of results for the longest lasting synthetic dermal filler. A downside to a product like this, is that although a patient might see a correction immediately after their treatment, this effect will go away as the product is absorbed and a patient is left looking like they did prior to their injection of Sculptra. The magic of this product is what is happening under the skin that a patient cannot visually see. It begins to work deep under the skin and reinforces areas with collagen loss, volumizing and smoothing the area naturally for a more youthful look. Although Sculptra is more predominantly requested for injection in certain areas of the face, because it stimulates the body’s natural collagen production, it can be injected anywhere that a patient feels collagen has been lost and they would benefit from collagen being restored. For anyone considering Sculptra, we advise visiting their website or calling our office.
